Yellow Jacket
About Yellow Jackets
Yellow jackets (Vespula spp.) are black and yellow wasps about ½ inch long, commonly mistaken for bees. In Boston, they are most active from late spring through early fall, building nests in the ground, wall cavities, or bushes.
Risks & Concerns
Unlike honeybees, yellow jackets can sting repeatedly, and their stings are painful and may trigger allergic reactions. They are especially aggressive when defending their nests, making them a hazard in yards, parks, and outdoor spaces.
Prevention & Control
Avoid leaving sugary drinks or food outdoors, and keep garbage bins tightly sealed. Do not attempt to remove a nest yourself, as swarms can be dangerous—professional removal is strongly recommended.
