About Varied Carpet Beetles
The varied carpet beetle (Anthrenus verbasci) is a tiny beetle, only about 1/10 inch long, with a mottled pattern of white, brown, and yellow scales. Adults feed on pollen outdoors but often wander indoors, where they lay eggs. The real damage is caused by their larvae, which are small, hairy, and feed on natural fibers.
Risks & Concerns
Carpet beetle larvae damage clothing, carpets, upholstery, and other items containing wool, silk, feathers, or leather. Infestations can go unnoticed until damage appears. Adults may also be a nuisance as they gather near windows.
Prevention & Control
Vacuum regularly, store clothes in sealed containers, and clean out lint, dust, and hair that larvae feed on. For persistent infestations, professional treatment may be necessary to eliminate hidden larvae.
