Silverfish
About Silverfish
Silverfish (Lepisma saccharinum) are slender, carrot-shaped insects about ½ inch long, covered in metallic silver scales with long antennae and bristle-like tails. They prefer cool, damp environments like basements, bathrooms, and kitchens.
Risks & Concerns
Silverfish feed on starchy materials such as paper, glue, fabrics, and dry goods, leaving behind irregular holes and yellowish stains. Infestations often go unnoticed until damage appears to books, wallpaper, or stored items.
Prevention & Control
Reduce humidity in basements and bathrooms, seal cracks, and store dry goods in sealed containers. Sticky traps can help monitor infestations, but larger problems may need professional treatment.
