Powderpost Beetle
About Powderpost Beetles
Powderpost beetles (Lyctinae subfamily) are small wood-boring beetles that attack hardwoods such as oak, ash, and walnut. Their larvae tunnel through wood, and when they emerge, they leave behind small round exit holes and piles of fine powder (frass).
Risks & Concerns
Over time, powderpost beetle activity can weaken structural wood, flooring, and furniture. Infestations may persist for years if untreated, as generations of beetles continue to re-infest wood.
Prevention & Control
Sealing wood surfaces with varnish or paint helps deter beetles. If active infestations are suspected, professional inspection and treatment (such as targeted insecticide or fumigation) may be necessary to protect structures and furnishings.
