Paper Wasp
About Paper Wasps
Paper wasps (Polistes spp.) are about ¾ inch long with long legs and narrow waists. They build open, papery nests with visible hexagonal cells, usually attached to eaves, porches, and overhangs in Boston neighborhoods.
Risks & Concerns
Paper wasps are generally less aggressive than yellow jackets but will defend their nests if disturbed. Their sting is painful and may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
Prevention & Control
Inspect eaves and overhangs regularly for early signs of nest-building in spring. Small nests can sometimes be removed safely with caution, but established nests near doorways or high-traffic areas are best handled by professionals.
