About Oriental Cockroaches

The Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis) is a shiny black or dark reddish-brown roach that grows about an inch long. Unlike many other species, they prefer cool, damp conditions and are often found in Boston’s basements, crawl spaces, and sewers. They are less agile than German or American cockroaches but can still move quickly when disturbed.

Risks & Concerns

Oriental cockroaches are often seen crawling from drains or utility areas, earning them the nickname “water bug.” They feed on decaying organic matter and garbage, which makes them strong carriers of bacteria and pathogens. In addition to contaminating surfaces and food, they also produce a distinctive foul odor that worsens as infestations grow.

Prevention & Control

Moisture reduction is key to keeping Oriental cockroaches away. Repair leaks, improve drainage, and keep basements and storage areas dry and clean. Sealing gaps around doors and drains also helps limit their entry. Because they often travel between sewer systems and indoor spaces, infestations can be especially challenging and often require professional treatment.
