Indian Meal Moth
About Indian Meal Moths
Indian meal moths (Plodia interpunctella) are small moths with brown-and-tan wings, about ½ inch long. They lay eggs in stored food, and the larvae feed on grains, cereals, nuts, dried fruits, and pet food.
Risks & Concerns
Infestations spread quickly, with larvae spinning silk webs in stored food products. Contamination makes food unfit to eat.
Prevention & Control
Store dry goods in airtight containers, discard infested items, and vacuum pantry shelves. Pheromone traps may help monitor infestations, but professional treatment may be needed for severe cases.
