House Mosquito
About House Mosquitoes
The common house mosquito (Culex pipiens) is a small, brownish mosquito active from late spring through early fall in Boston. They breed in standing water such as gutters, bird baths, storm drains, and containers left outdoors.
Risks & Concerns
Besides itchy bites, house mosquitoes can transmit West Nile virus and other illnesses. Their buzzing and nighttime feeding habits make them a nuisance both indoors and outdoors.
Prevention & Control
Eliminate standing water around properties, clean gutters regularly, and use screens on windows and doors. Mosquito management may include larvicides and treatments in high-risk areas.
