House Fly
About House Flies
House flies (Musca domestica) are gray flies about ¼ inch long with red eyes. They breed in garbage, manure, and decaying organic matter, which allows them to thrive in Boston’s urban environment.
Risks & Concerns
House flies carry and spread bacteria, including E. coli and Salmonella, by landing on food, counters, and utensils. Infestations can grow quickly in warm weather and are especially problematic in food-handling environments.
Prevention & Control
Maintain strict sanitation by keeping trash sealed and removing waste regularly. Install and maintain window and door screens. Professional fly control may be necessary for persistent infestations.
