Green Bottle Fly
About Green Bottle Flies
Green bottle flies (Lucilia sericata) are shiny, metallic-green flies about ½ inch long. They lay eggs in decaying organic matter, including garbage, carrion, and animal waste.
Risks & Concerns
Indoors, they are a sanitation concern, as they can contaminate food and surfaces after contact with decaying material. Their presence often indicates nearby garbage or an animal carcass.
Prevention & Control
Keep garbage bins sealed and clean, and promptly remove pet waste. Screen doors and windows help reduce entry. If infestations occur indoors, finding and removing the source is critical.
