Fungus Gnat
About Fungus Gnats
Fungus gnats (Sciaridae family) are tiny black flies, about 1/8 inch long, often mistaken for mosquitoes. Adults fly weakly around plants, while larvae feed on organic matter and roots in damp soil.
Risks & Concerns
Though harmless to humans, heavy infestations can damage seedlings and potted plants by attacking roots. Their constant presence indoors can also be irritating.
Prevention & Control
Allow soil to dry between watering, use well-draining potting mix, and remove decaying plant material. Sticky traps can catch adults, but controlling soil moisture is key to long-term prevention.
