Fruit Fly
About Fruit Flies
Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) are 1/8 inch long with tan bodies and red eyes. They breed rapidly in rotting fruit, sugary liquids, drains, and trash bins.
Risks & Concerns
Fruit flies contaminate food and surfaces by landing after contact with decaying material. Infestations spread quickly and are particularly problematic in kitchens and food-prep areas.
Prevention & Control
Keep produce refrigerated, empty garbage frequently, and clean drains and recycling bins. Small infestations can be controlled with traps, but eliminating breeding sources is essential.
