Deer Tick
About Deer Ticks
The deer tick (Ixodes scapularis) is a small, reddish-brown tick, only 3–5 mm long. They are active from spring through fall and attach to deer, rodents, pets, and humans.
Risks & Concerns
Deer ticks transmit Lyme disease, babesiosis, and anaplasmosis. Their bites are painless, so they often go unnoticed until the tick is engorged. Boston residents encounter them most often during outdoor activities in grassy or wooded areas.
Prevention & Control
Wear long clothing, use repellents, and check for ticks after outdoor activity. Keep grass trimmed and remove leaf litter near homes. Prompt tick removal reduces the risk of disease transmission.
