Boxelder Bug
About Boxelder Bugs
Boxelder bugs (Boisea trivittata) are about ½ inch long, black with red-orange markings. They feed on boxelder, maple, and ash trees outdoors, but move indoors in autumn seeking shelter.
Risks & Concerns
They do not bite or damage property but can stain surfaces with their excrement. Large numbers inside homes can be annoying.
Prevention & Control
Seal cracks and gaps around windows and doors in the fall. Vacuum up individual bugs indoors. Exterior treatments may be needed for heavy invasions.
