About Black Widow Spiders
The black widow spider (Latrodectus mactans) is well known for its shiny black body and red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. They are most common in southern states, but rare cases have been reported in Massachusetts, typically in sheltered outdoor spaces or transported goods.
Risks & Concerns
Their venom is neurotoxic and can cause severe muscle pain, cramps, and sweating. While fatalities are extremely rare, their bite requires medical attention. Boston residents are unlikely to encounter them, but their reputation alone creates concern when they are mentioned.
Prevention & Control
Regularly check and shake out items stored in sheds, garages, or basements. If black widows are suspected, avoid handling them directly and contact a pest professional for safe removal.
