Black Carpenter Ant
About Black Carpenter Ants
The black carpenter ant (Camponotus pennsylvanicus) is one of the largest ants in Boston, often reaching ½ inch long. Unlike termites, they do not eat wood, but they excavate it to create smooth tunnels for nesting.
Risks & Concerns
Carpenter ants can cause structural damage if infestations go untreated. They are often found in damp or rotting wood around windows, decks, and basements. Indoors, they forage for sweets, proteins, and pet food.
Prevention & Control
Repair water-damaged wood, trim tree branches touching buildings, and seal cracks to prevent entry. Professional inspection is important to locate and eliminate satellite colonies.
