Biting Midge
About Biting Midges
Biting midges (Ceratopogonidae family) are tiny, grayish flies only 1–3 mm long. Despite their size, they deliver painful bites and are most active at dawn and dusk.
Risks & Concerns
They are primarily a nuisance pest. While some species transmit livestock diseases, in Boston they mainly cause irritation and itchy welts in humans.
Prevention & Control
Use insect repellent and wear protective clothing when outdoors in infested areas. Screens with very fine mesh can help reduce indoor entry.
