Bald-Faced Hornet
About Bald-Faced Hornets
The bald-faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) is actually a type of yellow jacket, though it resembles a hornet due to its size. They are black with white markings and can grow up to an inch long. Their aerial nests, often the size of a basketball, are commonly found in trees, shrubs, and on buildings.
Risks & Concerns
These hornets are highly aggressive near their nests and can sting repeatedly, making them a serious risk if nests are close to homes, businesses, or outdoor activity areas. Their stings can be very painful and may cause allergic reactions.
Prevention & Control
Avoid approaching nests and keep outdoor trash bins secure. Because of their defensive nature, bald-faced hornet nests should only be removed by trained professionals.
